English at Martock Church School

At Martock Church School, our progressive English curriculum is built around high‑quality, engaging books that inspire children to develop a deep love of reading and writing. Each unit is anchored by a carefully chosen text, providing rich contexts for meaningful discussion, creative writing, and vocabulary development. Throughout the year, we explicitly teach and frequently revisit key grammar and spelling skills, ensuring pupils can apply them confidently and accurately in their work. By writing for a wide range of real purposes, such as stories, information texts, letters, and persuasive pieces, children learn to adapt their style and voice while building the strong literacy foundations they need to thrive.

Whole School Aims

At Martock Church School, we aim to nurture ambitious, confident readers and writers who have the literacy skills they need to access the world around them. We believe that reading opens doors, builds empathy, and helps children understand perspectives beyond their own. That’s why we immerse pupils in a wide range of high‑quality literature that reflects our No Outsiders vision of inclusion, diversity, and tolerance. Through carefully selected texts that celebrate different voices, cultures, and experiences, we help children recognise themselves in stories while also learning about others. By developing strong reading and writing foundations and fostering an inclusive mindset, we empower our pupils to communicate effectively, think critically, and engage thoughtfully with the communities and world they are part of.

Subject Vision

We empower children to become skilled communicators by explicitly teaching and continually revisiting key grammar, spelling, and vocabulary knowledge within meaningful writing opportunities. Whether crafting narratives, expressing opinions or presenting information, pupils learn to write with clarity, purpose, and creativity. Through this approach, we aim to equip every child with the confidence and capability to use reading and writing as powerful tools for learning, expression, and connection.
