PE at Martock Primary School
Curriculum Intent Statement: Physical Education (PE)
Introduction
At Martock Primary School, we believe that Physical Education (PE) plays a vital role in developing the whole child. Our PE curriculum aligns closely with our school's core values of kindness, perseverance, respect, and collaboration. Through engaging and inclusive PE lessons, we aim to nurture a lifelong love of physical activity and healthy living in our pupils.
Key Aims
Our PE curriculum is designed to:
- Develop physical competence and confidence in a broad range of physical activities
- Foster an understanding of the importance of physical activity for a healthy lifestyle
- Promote teamwork, communication, and leadership skills
- Build resilience, determination, and a growth mindset in our pupils
- Provide opportunities for all pupils, including those with SEND, to experience success and make progress
Content and Skills
Across Key Stage 1 and 2, our pupils will develop a wide range of fundamental movement skills, including locomotion, manipulation, and stabilisation. They will apply these skills in a variety of individual, paired, and team-based activities, such as games, gymnastics, dance, and athletics.
Our PE curriculum also places a strong emphasis on developing pupils' understanding of the benefits of physical activity, healthy eating, and personal hygiene. Pupils will learn how to monitor and evaluate their own physical and mental wellbeing, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to lead active, healthy lifestyles.
Progression
As pupils move through the school, the PE curriculum will build upon their prior knowledge and skills, ensuring a coherent and progressive learning journey. In the early years, the focus will be on developing fundamental movement skills and promoting physical activity through play-based learning. In Key Stage 1, pupils will begin to apply these skills in more structured activities, with an increasing emphasis on teamwork and strategy.
In Key Stage 2, pupils will continue to develop their physical competence, while also exploring more complex tactical and creative elements within a range of sports and activities. They will have opportunities to take on leadership roles, officiate games, and engage in competitive and collaborative experiences.
Wider Impact
By delivering a high-quality, inclusive PE curriculum, we aim to empower our pupils to become confident, resilient, and physically literate individuals. We believe that the skills and experiences gained through PE will not only support their physical development but also contribute to their overall wellbeing, social interactions, and academic achievement.
Our PE curriculum will also play a key role in addressing some of the school's improvement priorities, such as improving the progress and independence of SEND pupils, and increasing engagement in wellbeing and curriculum activities to promote better attendance.
