Spanish Curriculum Rationale

At Martock Primary School, we have chosen to use the Kapow Primary Spanish curriculum to deliver our Spanish provision. This curriculum has been carefully selected to align with our school's vision, values, and improvement priorities, as well as to address the specific needs of our pupil population.

The Kapow Primary Spanish curriculum is designed to provide a spiral and interactive approach to language learning, which is well-suited to the needs of our pupils. The spiral nature of the curriculum ensures that key concepts and skills are revisited and built upon over time, allowing our pupils to develop a deep and secure understanding of the Spanish language. The interactive elements of the curriculum, including engaging resources and activities, help to foster a love of language learning and keep our pupils motivated and engaged.

This curriculum fully meets the requirements of the National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages. It provides a comprehensive programme of study that covers the key areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as developing an understanding of Spanish culture and traditions. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that pupils make steady progress in their language skills, building on their prior knowledge and experiences.

The Kapow Primary Spanish curriculum is particularly well-suited to the needs of our pupils, as it is designed to be inclusive and accessible for all learners. The spiral nature of the curriculum, with its emphasis on revisiting and reinforcing key concepts, is particularly beneficial for our pupils with SEND, who may require additional support and scaffolding to develop their language skills. Additionally, the interactive and engaging nature of the resources and activities helps to address the needs of our pupils who may struggle with traditional language learning approaches.

Furthermore, the Kapow Primary Spanish curriculum aligns closely with our school's vision and values. Our commitment to providing a nurturing environment where everyone is different and everyone is included is reflected in the inclusive and accessible nature of the curriculum. The emphasis on developing a love of language learning and an appreciation for different cultures and traditions also aligns with our school's values of kindness, perseverance, respect, and collaboration.

Whole School Aims

The Kapow Primary Spanish curriculum supports the realisation of our school's vision, which is to give our staff and children the chance to flourish in a nurturing environment with excellent opportunities, where everyone experiences success and makes a positive difference to the world around them.

By providing a high-quality, engaging, and inclusive Spanish curriculum, we aim to foster a love of language learning in our pupils and help them develop the skills and knowledge they need to communicate effectively in Spanish. This aligns with our school's vision of providing excellent opportunities for our pupils to develop and succeed.

Subject Vision

At Martock Primary School, we believe that the study of Spanish is an essential part of a well-rounded education. Learning a foreign language not only helps our pupils develop important language skills, but also fosters an appreciation for different cultures and traditions, and promotes the development of important cognitive and social-emotional skills.

Our intent in teaching Spanish is to ensure that all our pupils, regardless of their starting points or individual needs, have the opportunity to develop a strong foundation in the Spanish language and culture. We aim to equip our pupils with the skills and knowledge they need to communicate effectively in Spanish, both in the classroom and in real-world situations.

This aligns with our school's improvement priorities, particularly in relation to improving the progress, outcomes, and independence of our SEND pupils. By providing a carefully structured and inclusive Spanish curriculum, we aim to support the development of our SEND pupils' language skills and foster their independence and confidence in using the Spanish language.

Communication with Stakeholders

To ensure the successful implementation of the Kapow Primary Spanish curriculum, we will engage in effective communication with all stakeholders, including parents, carers, and the wider school community.

We will also provide regular updates on the progress and achievements of our pupils in Spanish, highlighting the successes and celebrating the efforts of all learners. This will help to foster a sense of pride and engagement among our school community, and demonstrate the value we place on language learning.

Additionally, we will seek feedback from parents, carers, and pupils on the Spanish curriculum, using this information to continuously refine and improve our provision. This will help to ensure that the curriculum remains relevant and responsive to the needs of our school community.

Addressing Inspection Feedback

The Kapow Primary Spanish curriculum directly addresses the key areas for improvement identified in the recent Ofsted inspection, particularly in relation to developing subject knowledge. The Kapow curriculum places a strong emphasis on developing subject knowledge and pedagogical expertise among teaching staff.

By implementing the Kapow Primary Spanish curriculum, we are confident that we can address the key areas for improvement identified in the Ofsted inspection, and provide our pupils with a high-quality, inclusive, and engaging language learning experience that supports their overall academic and personal development.
